Dear Parents/Guardians of Miss Marshall's Gr.3/4 class,
Our class will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Monday, February 14th. The students are making Valentine bags to collect Valentines given out by their classmates. If your child would like to hand out Valentines, please ensure that everyone in the class receives one, so no one feels left out. Please also send in a small empty box or tin, (like a box for earrings, or a mint tin) as each student is going to include a kind saying for their classmates. It will be anonymous and it is just a kind gesture for everyone on that day.
Due to COVID health and safety protocols, please remember the following:
· Valentine cards can be brought to school on Monday, February 14th.
· Please only send cards to students in our class so that cross contamination does not happen.
· If you would like to attach anything else to the Valentines, please ensure it is a prepackaged item (e.g. box of Smarties, cellophane wrapped lollipop). Goody bags with loose candy will not be allowed. Pencils and stickers are an excellent substitution for candy.
Please see the class list below so you don't forget anyone, and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns!
Sincerely,
Miss Jane Marshall

December 16, 2021 THE BOX PROJECT
Dear Parent(s)/ Guardian of Miss Marshall’s Gr.3/4 class,
Part of our curriculum focuses on the process of brainstorming ideas, planning, creating a product and then sharing it. In the first week back after the Winter Break, we will do a class project which will focus on these processes. Students have been asked to bring in at least one empty box on the first day back from winter break (Tuesday, January 4, 2022). These boxes can be any size. During the first week in January, the students will be led through the processes of critical thinking and perseverance to create their box into anything that they want. We have a variety of basic craft items at the school; however, if they would like unique craft supplies to supplement their project, they are welcome to bring them from home to add to their creation (e.g., glitter glue, buttons, recycled materials, stickers, etc.). I am excited for this class project and look forward to seeing the amazing creations that the students will come up with!
Sincerely,
Miss Jane Marshall

Dear Parents /Guardians,
As a class, we have decided to have fun with Christmas in our classroom and the class decided that they each want a Secret Santa. In order to participate, we need your child to buy a gift for their Secret Santa. A maximum amount of a $5.00 gift was suggested to give to another child or adult (Mr. Hayes and Mrs. Spelay are taking part in our Secret Santa as well) in our class. Your child has drawn a name and they will bring in their gift on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 to their Secret Santa. Christmas time is a time of giving and our class is very excited about this. In order for this to be a success, everyone has been asked to participate. I know that Christmas time is tight for everyone, so if funds are an issue, your child is encouraged to make something for their Secret Santa.
Your child came home yesterday with a class list with three things that each child may want. Your son or daughter has been given the name of the child they are the Secret Santa for. Please use this list for any ideas.
The gift that your child has made or bought needs be wrapped nicely and their Secret Santa’s name needs to be printed on the wrapping paper. Your child will find out who their Secret Santa was on the same day. Thanks for making this a success for your child.
Sincerely,
Miss Jane Marshall

Dear Parents /Guardians of Miss Marshall’s Gr.3/4 class,
I am very excited to inform you that we are going to be decorating Christmas grapevine wreaths. Mr. Hayes' sister has graciously donated the actual grapevine wreaths for each child in our class. Now they need to be decorated by your child.
Some Christmas decorations that your child will need for these wreaths that may be purchased at the dollar store include:
- Small Christmas ornaments
- Feathers
- Christmas ribbons
- Little wrapped presents
- Small Christmas bows
- Evergreen boughs
- Silk poinsettias
- Candy canes
- Styrofoam red berries
- Pinecones
- Wooden little reindeer
We will be starting this project on Monday, November 15/21 so I would like your child to have his or her supplies at school for the wreath by Friday, November 12/21. Please send your child's wreath supplies and a bag with his or her name clearly marked on their bag.
I know the children will thoroughly enjoy this activity and the wreath will be a Christmas decoration that you will be able to keep for years to come.
Thanks so much for supplying the materials needed for your child to make a beautiful Christmas grapevine wreath.
Yours sincerely,
Miss Jane Marshall

Dear Parents /Guardians of Miss Marshall’s Grade 3/4 class,
As you are all aware, Halloween is soon approaching. Since Halloween is this coming Sunday this year, the Ellison Staff has chosen to have their Halloween celebrations on Friday, October 29, 2021. Your child is encouraged to dress up for the day; however, no scary masks, scary costumes, fake blood, or violent props are permitted.
During the morning, the students will be rotating through our class, Miss Shephard's class, and Mrs. Baxter's class. My students will be starting in our class, where each child will make a Candy Corn Monster. Then they will go to Miss Shephard's class, and each student will making Slime. Finally, our class will end up in Mrs. Baxter's class and the students will be working on a S.T.E.M. activity.
After lunch, our class will be working through a curricular fall / Halloween Fun Booklet that includes activities on these themes. To make this party a success, I am encouraging everyone to try to take part in it.
Because of COVID restrictions, home baked foods will not be coming into the school. Each student will receive some Halloween treats from me. Each treat is store bought and individually wrapped.
Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Miss Jane Marshall

Dear Parents /Guardians of Miss Jane Marshall's Gr 3/4 class,
As you are all aware, Parent/Teacher/Student Zoom conferences are tomorrow, Wednesday, October 6 and Thursday, October 7, 2021. There will be an early dismissal on both of these days at 12:30 P.M. This being said, please pack a larger snack or even a lunch for your child. Your child will not be having a set time for lunch, but they will be able to have it during class time.
Each scheduled Zoom conference will be 15 minutes. This time goes quite quickly so please join your scheduled Zoom meeting promptly on time. My personal Zoom number is 442 217 4443. Please use this number when you join your scheduled Zoom conference meeting. If your child is able to attend the Zoom meeting, I would appreciate it. During this time, I will review our class routines, what we will be studying for the rest of this term, and the strengths that I have observed about your child.
I also wanted to remind everyone that Friday, October 8, 2021, is Implementation Day so there will be no school for students.
I hope everyone has a great rest of the week and a very happy Thanksgiving to all of my students and their families.
Thank you so much.
Sincerely,

Hello, parents and guardians of Miss Marshall's Grade 3/4 class,
This year I will be using Fresh Grade to document and share your child's learning with you. For those of you who are new to our Ellison community, Fresh Grade is a digital portfolio where only you can see pictures and videos of your child's learning and growth. When you create an account on Fresh Grade, no one can see your child's pictures and videos unless you choose to download and save the pictures yourself. None of these photos and videos are shareable to social media.
There is one major change to Fresh Grade this year if you have used it in the past. The Fresh Grade Classic version has been discontinued. You will need to delete your previous app and install the newest version, Fresh Grade Connect, and create a new account.
Before I can send an invitation for you to view your child's Fresh Grade account, I need your permission to use it. Please click on the link below for you to consent digitally. I will need your consent no later than Monday, October 4 th. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this!

Dear Parents /Guardians of Miss Marshall’s Gr.3/4 class,
Now that your child has been in our class for a week, I wanted to remind you of some of our class procedures. Communication between home and school is vital to your child's success. Having said that, the following information is important for you.
Your child's Agenda is the primary form of communication between home and school. I look at the Agenda every morning after your child has written what is important for you to see that evening. In order for me to know that you have seen your child's Agenda, please sign it daily. A red check indicates that the subject has been completed in class time. A red arrow beside a subject means that we did not get to it during the day.
If you need to speak to me directly, please call me at the school number, 250-870-5140, between 8:00 A.M to 8:20 A.M, or between 2:45 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.
Because of current COVID-19 restrictions, face-to-face communication is not possible at this time.
Please avoid the use of email communication, as I cannot guarantee if and when I check it, in the evenings or on the weekends. Agenda and telephone communication are much more effective, encouraged, and appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
Miss Jane Marshall

Dear Parent/Guardian,
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Miss Jane Marshall and I am excited to be teaching your child this year. I am going into my 28th year of teaching in School District 23 and I have taught at Ellison for over 10 years. I have a special interest in Language Arts, Music, Art, Drama, and French as a second language.
As we are still in a pandemic, we are following all the required safety measures. Students who are in grades K-3, are required to wear a mask in class and students in grades 4-5 must wear a mask daily in class, unless that child has medical reasons that prevent this
When your child is celebrating his or her birthday, please do not send any food treats for the rest of the class. You may send individually packed items, such as pencils or stickers, but no food.
Each class has a designated door that your child will line up at in the morning, after lunch, and after recess. Our class' door is the door by the gym, closest to the change rooms. If you are meeting your child on the school grounds after school, then this is where he or she will be meeting you. If you are dropping off or picking up your child, please drop off or pick up him or her at the end of the drive through (by the big blue garbage bins). You may also park on Parkdale Road, at the front of the school, and meet your child at the designated door that I mentioned above.
Part of my daily classroom routine, is having my students write in their Agenda. This is a great communication tool. Your child will write in his or her Agenda any unfinished class work and I will check and sign it before they leave for the day.
So the Agendas are used effectively, I ask that parents sign the daily entry every school day, after ensuring that the work is complete. As long as your child is working hard during class time, home assignments will be kept to a minimum. If there are subjects where no work is assigned or we did not get to the work during the day, your child will draw a red arrow beside it in his or her Agenda. You can check my web site for work assignments or you can communicate in your child's Agenda as well.
Library day for our class is on Wednesday. Students are encouraged to take out at least 3 books per week. One of the books is recommended to be a chapter book. "Reading is the key to success!" Students should be reading aloud each day and this will improve your child's fluency, accuracy, and comprehension.
Gym strips (clean shirt, clean shorts or sweat pants, and indoor gym shoes) are required on PE days, which are Thursday and Friday. Their gym bags will be taken home on the weekends to be cleaned. Each student is expected to participate in PE and a portion of their mark will be determined if they are wearing their P.E. strip. If your child is unable to participate during a P.E. class, then a signed parental note is needed.
If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please feel free to contact me through the Agenda, via email at [email protected] or by calling the school at 250-870-5140.
I look forward to working with you this year, as we help your child experience the joys of learning! ~Your participation and encouragement will be major contributions to your child’s success this year.
Sincerely,
Miss Jane Marshall
